With the face angle in the Open position, his Draw was changed into a Straight ball flight, up to maybe a 5 yard FADE. Switching the face angle to Closed, turned his nice draw into an out of control HOOK. For him, the Neutral position face produced his usual 10 to 15 yard DRAW. Next step was to repeat the testing with a playing partner of mine, one that happens to fight a HOOK on occasion. Again, not too much of a draw or a HOOK, but a nice draw that I could use if needed. And again as expected, the ball flight became a nice workable DRAW. Next came the test with the head in the Closed position. Not so much that it could be confused with a SLICE, but a nice useable FADE. And again as I expected, the ball flight was a nice controllable Fade. Next I tested the driver with the head set to the Open position. As I expected, my ball flight was straight and long. Testing of the Cobra ZL involved first hitting dozens of range ball with the head set to the Neutral position to see what the ball flight would be for me. Each shaft comes with an aluminum shaft adapter for quick and easy custom fitting of the driver to the customer. A light weight composite crown and sole, and a weight screw to fine tune the CG and ball flight. Editor's Note: As tested, we used the Cobra ZL 9.5* 46 inch club length and Cobra/Voodoo 62 gram S flex shaft. The 8.5* driver is only available in Right hand version. If you want two or three interchangeable shafts for your driver, all you have to do is order another shaft or two. Chances are pretty good that if you have a custom shaft that you really like, Cobra has it available as an option. I didn?t count the exact number of shaft options available but the number is over 30, and that doesn?t include flex options, just makes and models to pick from. The Cobra ZL customer isn?t limited to ONE factory standard shaft, but rather a huge selection of aftermarket high quality custom shafts. By going to this rather simple yet effective design, Cobra is able to built just ONE driver for ALL skill levels of golfers, and that saves the stocking retails a lot of money.Īlong with being able to adjust the face angle, the design also allows for quick and easy shaft exchange. While having two drivers one for less skilled golfer and one for better golfers does solve the problem, it also means the factory has to build TWO drivers instead of just one, and that means more inventory both for the makers as well as for the golf shops that carry their products. Most Tour drivers are designed with a Square or slightly Open face angle and are best only for the better golfer. While this may benefit the golfer that fights a slice, it can be a problem for the better golfer or a ?Curse? for the golfer that fits a hook. This is to help the less skilled golfer to not ?Slice? the ball too much. 5 degree closed to a full 2 degrees closed.Īs you may know, most drivers being sold today come with a closed club face. By the simple adjustment, you can change the face angle for 1 degree Open, to. The shaft adapter installed on the shaft is marked with the 3 letters, N, C, and O, for easy alignment with the index mark on the hosel of the head. All you do is loosen the screw enough to allow you to rotate the shaft to the desired positon, and then you re-tighten the screw and you?re all done. The driver comes with a wrench to loosen the set screw in the sole of the club at the end of the hosel. All this with a Cobra/Aldila VooDoo shaft for high launch, optimum spin and maximum distance.Īdjusting the face angle couldn?t be any easier. All in ONE easy to use and easy to adjust driver. The goal was the built the BEST driver for the most distance, the best ball flight for every golfer, and overall best performance. To reach this goal when designing the new ZL driver, the design team combined the 9 point face technology, with Multi Material construction, Stainless steel Weight screw technology with Adjustable Flight Technology, ?AFT?. The ZL in the Cobra ZL name stands for Zero Limits. I think this is a pretty simple design and one that any golfer can understand and remember, unlike some of the adjustable shaft designs that you need an owner?s manual and half a day to figure out. And in the Closed position the face angle is closed. In the Open position, the face angle is opened up. In the Neutral position, the club face is set to a Square face angle. The shaft can be adjusted to change the face angle of the club. It just has one simple design idea and it does what it?s designed to do. Unlike some of the other new drivers coming out, the Cobra ZL doesn?t go overboard with fancy new design ideas. And the Cobra ZL is one of the better clubs I?ve had a chance to demo over the years. One of the nice things about reviewing golf equipment is getting to demo some really nice clubs and other golf related items.
